All new first time learner permit holders for motorcycles, and anyone upgrading between categories, are required to undertake Initial Basic Training (IBT) with an Approved IBT Instructor (ADI).

IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE ON THE PUBLIC ROAD UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETED IBT AND CARRY THE CERTIFICATE ALONG WITH YOUR LEARNER PERMIT

Once IBT is complete the learner permit holder will be issued with a certificate which must be kept with their learner permit.

  • You must complete the program before riding unsupervised on the road while a learner.
  • Evidence of completing the modules will be signed off in a learner’s logbook by an Approved IBT Instructor.

IBT is done in either 3 or 4 modules depending on your circumstances. 

For AM and A1 Modules 1, 2, 3 & 4 are done.

For A2 and A Modules 1, 3 & 5 are done.

 

IBT Logbook

This is an important document and your instructor will fill sign this as every module is completed. You will get one of these when you start IBT.

Module 1

Module 1 is a classroom based module and has 6 objectives.

Module 2

Module 2 is done in the training area and has 10 objectives.

Module 3

Module 3 is a classroom based module and has 9 objectives.

Module 4

Module 4 is a road based module and has 8 objectives.

Module 5

Module 5 is a practical module and is done between the training area and the road.

Certificate of Satisfactory Completion

This is the certificate you recieve when you succesfully complete IBT. This is an important document and will be needed when you are getting insurance.
